Quote: Eric Clapton

I have no problem with religion, and I grew up with a strong curiosity about spiritual matters, but my searching took me away from church and community worship to the internal journal. Before my recovery began, I found my God in music and the arts, with writers like Hermann Hesse, and musicians like Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, and Little Walter. In some way, in some form, my God was always there, but now I have learned to talk to him.

Eric Clapton “Edge of Darkness”

To commemorate the arrival of my EC strat here is Eric Clapton playing Edge of Darkness.  I’m not sure exactly when this was but judging by the hairstyle I guess its around 1990. EC + Strat + Soldano + Orchestra + Spooky Tune = Wow!

Photo: Eric Clapton Stratocaster

I’ve wanted an Eric Clapton Stratocaster ever since I was learning guitar.  I agree that EC was definitely at his best in the late 60’s when toting a Gibson – but I have a special affection for his Strat / Soldano period (eg Journeyman / 24 Nights) too.

So here I was working very late at night last week when I spotted an EC signature strat in 7 Up Green on Ebay.  Its an ‘88 (which was the first year these went into production) in what looks like very fresh condition. I put in a little speculator bid and managed to nab it. TNT should have it here for me tomorrow. Excited!

I would challenge anybody to come up with a better design for a guitar. The Stratocaster is as good as it gets.

Legendary Tones – Clapton’s Early Years

A great overview of Clapton’s gear during his little ‘God’ phase circa 1966 -1969.

Robert Cray “Time Makes Two”

If you’ve ever been on the fence about Robert Cray just watch this great take of his track Time Makes Two. Recorded amongst a who’s who of guitar players (John Mayer, Eric Johnson, Jeff Beck, Santana, Buddy Guy et al) at Eric Clapton’s Crossroads Guitar Festival in June 2004 Cray outshone every other performer there. He digs so deep. I can’t think of any other modern blues performer who could touch this.

Eric Clapton 1968 “Woman Tone” Interview

A classic interview with Eric Clapton at the height of his powers in 1968. The formal tone of the interviewer is a bit awkward but he gets Eric to cover some good stuff including how he works his tone controls, dynamics, vibrato, the infamous “woman tone”, stock phrases and music as an outlet of emotion. Somebody please tell EC to play an SG again.
