NGD: Smokin’ Tokai ES130

Here is my beautiful new Tokai ES130, a Japanese reproduction of a ’58 Gibson 335, which was made in 2008 (Note: This is the same as the current ES155 model). Everything is right about this guitar. It looks stunning (check the lovely bit of flame), sounds superb (I like it a lot better than the Ibanez JSM1000 Scofield I had) and chicks dig it (my wife says this is the best looking and sounding guitar I own).

I found the Tokai during a late night Ebay session last week. I looked at it…thought about it…went to bed…thought about it some more…got out of bed…came back to the computer…and pressed Buy It Now. One of those “Oh my . . . I just BIN’d it . . . what am I going to do now?”. Anyway I scrambled to get the money together and picked the guitar up yesterday. The seller was a great old blues cat with great taste in music and guitars. He let me play his original ’62 Gibson ES-330 which was magical . . . like ‘other worldly’ good. He has also put me onto Ronnie Earl which I’ll be sinking my ears into this week.

Anyways, a great experience and a superb guitar. Have revived a few BB licks already and no doubt will be working on more. A few more photos if you click through.

EVVY “You Think You Know Me” Rehearsal

Following a little buzz and nice vibes around EVVY yesterday (thanks to I Heart Guitar and Fender Custom Shop) here is another clip from the same rehearsal. We’re just feeling out this track You Think You Know Me. Sorry I’m facing the wrong way – I forgot about the camera. The fuzz is layed on courtesy of my Dice Works Muff Diver. The guitar is my Trussart Steelcaster Deluxe. The amp is a Budda Superdrive II 18.

Eric Gales . . . Doesn’t Get Those Music Store Nerves

You know that feeling you get when you sit down to try out a guitar or amp in a music store? You feel a bit self conscious. You can barely get the guitar in tune. You nervously pop out some lame ass licks…or resort to Stairway or Sweet Child O’ Mine like everyone else. Eric Gales doesn’t have that problem.

Josh Smith “Canyon Pt2″

Who is Josh Smith? Wonder no longer. This cat has the vibe, the tone, the feel, the groove . . . all of the above. Wish I could of been sitting in the corner of this club taking it in. Josh’s website

Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers “I Should Have Known It”

I Should Have Known It by Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers. Cool riff and Mike Campbell rocking the SG. The old cats have still got it.

Crossroads With John Mayer and Keith Urban

Pretty cool collaboration between these fellas – the combination actually works really well. Some great playing and some lovely guitars too. Watch the whole thing here.
