Tom Bukovac Improv

Tom Bukovac is my hero. Here he is just jamming by himself late at night. The guy throws out tasty chops like a butcher at a meat market.

Quote: David Gilmour

My technique is laughable at times. I have developed a style of my own, I suppose, which creeps around. I don’t have to have too much technique for it. I’ve developed the parts of my technique that are useful to me. I’ll never be a very fast guitar player. I don’t really know what to say about my style. There’s always a melodic intent in there.

Pedalboard Planner

Link: Pedalboard Planner

Just when you thought you wasted enough time on guitar forums, Facebook, Twitter, Youtube etc here comes something guaranteed to suck hours away from your life. The Pedalboard Planner, supported by Pedaltrain, is a new pedalboard mock up tool that allows you to design the pedalboard of your dreams. Just choose a Pedaltrain size and then select the pedals you’d like on your virtual pedalboard. Lots of pedal brands are available and hopefully they’ll keep adding to the list. When you’re done (are guitarists ever done?) you can save an image file of the full pedalboard. Oh my gosh this is addictive.

Photo: Fender La Cabronita

This Fender Custom Shop La Cabronita, a bastard relic tele with Filtertron pickups, looks unbelievably hot. I beg the powers that be at Fender to put these on the regular US production line. I’d buy one.

Derek Trucks “Sahib Teri Bandi”

This clip from Derek Trucks live at the Henry Fonda Theater in 2007 is just sublime. He’s playing the intro of Sahib Teri Bandi and segueing into something else.

David Gilmour “On an Island”

Stunnning tone and feel from David Gilmour here in this great solo in On an Island from the Live in Gdansk concert DVD. Recorded in August 2006 as the last show of the On an Island tour. The definition of tasty chops right there.

Robert Cray “Time Makes Two”

If you’ve ever been on the fence about Robert Cray just watch this great take of his track Time Makes Two. Recorded amongst a who’s who of guitar players (John Mayer, Eric Johnson, Jeff Beck, Santana, Buddy Guy et al) at Eric Clapton’s Crossroads Guitar Festival in June 2004 Cray outshone every other performer there. He digs so deep. I can’t think of any other modern blues performer who could touch this.

I’m glad there are a lot of guitar players pursuing technique as diligently as they possibly can, because it leaves this whole other area open to people like me.

BB King “Sweet Sixteen”

Stunning performance of Sweet Sixteen by BB King in 1974. He plays and sings every note like he means it and the band burns the track up like a bonfire. Also keep you eye out for Muhammad Ali jumping out of his chair and bowing to the King at 6:50. Love it.
